Annie's Av 9 Page

Tisha B'Av is on July 30th, 2009
Each Feast Day starts the day before at Sunset and ends the day at sundown!

Did you know that many Jewish Dates have been historically significant? Av 9 is just one
of those dates. It is much more then coincidence that more then 10 events have all
occured on the same specific date. The temple in Jerusalem was destroyed twice and
both on the same date but years apart. What date was that? Yes, you guessed it. Av 9!!!

Definitions:
AV -
is the eleventh month of the Jewish year.
Tishah Be'av - The ninth day of the month of Av; a day of mourning for the
destruction of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. A fast day in the Jewish Calendar.

What happened on Tish B'Av in History?

Av 9 Bible Readings:
The Book of Lamentations is read.
"The Torah is taken out and the portion of
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 4:25-40 is read and
the
haftarah from Yeshayah (Isaiah) 8:13 - 9:23." from Tisha Be'Av from About Israel
Psalm 137 (for Tisha B'Av)

Customs:
It is customary to not wear leather shoes.
Many of the traditional mourning practices are observed: people refrain from smiles,
laughter and idle conversation, and sit on low stools.
Some Rabbis conduct services with every one sitting on the floor.

Quote from Bible Prophecy Research Page:
"9 Av - (Fast to commemorate destruction of 1st and 2nd Temple) 'Jewish tradition
states that the Messiah will appear on Tisha B'Av, and the day of
mourning will become
a national day of rejoicing with the rebuilt Temple' (Ready to Rebuild, Thomas Ice and
Randall Price; p 213). The zodiacal sign of this month is Leo. Judah is the associated
tribe.  It consists of 30 days with the 1st of Av never falling
on Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday. Theme: honor."

Many different events in History have happened
on certain important dates in Jewish History. Av 9 is one of them.

Biblical Events:
1. Av 9, 1280 BC - The spies returned and gave an evil report which discouraged the
Jewish people and ended with them wandering in the desert.
Numbers 14:30 & Numbers 1:1-14:1
2. Av 9, 586 BC - The first Temple was destroyed.
3. Av 9, 70 AD - The second Temple was destroyed.
4. The city of Betar was captured. Tens of thousands were killed. Apparently the Romans
had been fighting against Betar for 3+ years before it fell. The Talmud (Ta'anit 68:4)
says: "Eighty thousand war companies entered the city of Betar and the Romans were
killing men, women and children until their blood was oozing out from the doors, windows
and the pipes. The horse would drown in the blood to its nose and the blood would cause
stones of 40 se'ah to roll away and would proceed 40 miles to the sea...There is a
tradition that the Gentiles fertilized their fields with the blood
of Israel for seven years, not using any other fertilizer."

Modern Events:
1. First Crusade declared, 1095.
2. King Edward I expels all Jews from England, 1290.
3. Explusion of the Jews from Spain, 1492.
4. Pope Paul IV moves all the Jews into the ghetto, 1555.
5. Start of WWI.

Baker's Evangelical Dictionary has a page called Feasts and Festivals of Israel which says:
"After the exile, the Jews added memorial days for the fall of Jerusalem (eventually
fixed as the Ninth of Ab). " and "
The Postexilic Feasts. The Ninth of Ab. Ab is the
fifth month of the Jewish calendar. Zechariah 7:3-5 alludes to ritual fasting and
mourning carried out in the fifth and seventh months in commemoration of the
destruction of the temple. Eventually, the Jews settled on the Ninth of Ab as a day to
commemorate both the first destruction of the temple by Nebuchadnezzar and the
subsequent destruction of Herod's temple by the Romans in a.d. 70."

Zecheriah 7:3-5 "And to speak unto the priests which were in the house of the LORD
of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating
myself, as I have done these so many years? Then came the word of the LORD of
hosts unto me, saying, Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests,
saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month,
even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?"

Why do I have Jewish pages?
Well if you are interested in the answer to that question visit my:
Annie's "Why do you have pages about Jewish Feasts?" Page

Here is what a visitor shared with me:
8/7/03 - "When observing Tish B Av. It is observed by the Jewish time clock, not
secular. Therefore you observe Tish B av at sun down Wednesday (Yom Revi'I) to sun
down on Thursday (Yom Chamishi). This is not Jewish tradition. Its Gods time. Read
Genesis Chap 1:1-31 (B'Resheet). Love you and bless your work with the Lord."
