"I am black, but comely (beautiful), O ye daughters of Jerusalem,
as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon."
~Song of Solomon 1:5~

Black History Month, observed in February, month of Abraham Lincoln's and abolitionist Frederick Douglass' birthdays; recognizes the achievements and contributions of African Americans; launched by Carter G. Woodson in February 1926; initially lasted a week, changed to a month in 1976; new theme for month determined every year.

February is Black History Month, which replaced former week-long observances such as Negro History Week. From Compton's Encyclopedia
